Club Overview

We are NeuroTechSC, the UC Santa Cruz Chapter of NeuroTechX! We focus on project building and education covering the topics of Brain-Computer Interaction, Neuroscience, and Artficial Intelligence. We have four teams which focus on hardware, machine learning, data, and software respectively.

Our team proudly won 1st place in the NeuroTechX Student Competition not just once, but twice, in both 2021 and 2023. The first award-winning project was a silent-speech interface that uses EMG signals from the jawline to discern whether a user is thinking 'yes' or 'no' with an impressive 90% accuracy. Fast forward to 2023, we continued our winning streak with our pioneering Subvocal Phoneme Recognition Project, achieving a remarkable 98% accuracy rate across all 44 English phonemes. We invite you to connect with us during our regular meetings every Tuesday at 7pm, or join our Discord server!

Teams

Hardware

The Hardware Team is responsible for recording brain activity and developing systems to do so. The Hardware Team uses an 8-channel OpenBCI Cyton board .

Data

The Data Team is responsible for cleaning the noisy brain activity data into a clean and interpretable format. The Data Team uses a variety of techniques including Fast-Fourier Transforms and data normalization.

Machine Learning

Machine Learning is utilized to interpret and classify cleaned data into associated actions. The Machine Learning team trains our cleaned data on state-of-the-art Deep Learning Models.

Software

The Software Team bridges the work of the Hardware, Data, and Machine Learning teams. Our software's pipeline records user data, cleans it, and passes it through our trained Deep Learning model.
